Crackling sound when switching between sources on HDMI ARC

This answer applies to:

  • R410
  • R610
  • R810

Our products support HDMI eARC/ARC with PCM audio only. While most TVs can be configured to output PCM, some streaming apps or source devices may momentarily switch to Dolby or other formats, especially when launching or previewing (hovering over) them. This can cause a brief crackling or popping sound as our system rejects unsupported audio formats. To minimise this, ensure your TV’s audio output is set to PCM or Stereo only, and disable any "Auto" or "Bitstream" audio settings where possible.

While we do our best to minimise this with quick muting, the unpredictable and sudden nature of these audio format changes makes it difficult to fully prevent, so ultimately this needs to be resolved through the TV’s audio settings or firmware, but below are a few additional suggestions that may be of some help.

Check and Secure All Cable Connections:

  • Ensure all HDMI cables are firmly connected at both ends.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the cables to be sure.

Replace the HDMI Cable:

  • A low-quality or overly long HDMI cable can cause variuos audio and connection issues.
  • We recommend that only certified HDMI cables should be used.

Update Firmware:

  • Check for and install any available software or firmware updates for your TV and external source devices (e.g., streaming box, game console). Outdated software can cause compatibility issues.
